Mission Hills is finding a faith that has a Rhythm

We want to imagine faith as a sacred-yet-ordinary practice.

Imagine developing faith and building community around a set of shared practices—or “Rhythms”—which help us BE the Church whether we’re gathered or apart. “Rhythms” of Hospitality, Generosity, Gratitude, Compassion, Community, Renewal, & Apprenticing…because belief requires a response. We want to imagine faith that benefit others, faith that helps us understand the heart of God, faith that forms Christ-likeness in us, and a living faith that can be reproduced in those near us.

We want to imagine the Church as a lab

...because if growth is a process, then a practice can help us further along. Every great lecture has an application. Every lesson needs a laboratory to experiment. And every experiment is better with a partner, maybe even a few.

We want to imagine church as an extended family of faith.

The idea is for singles, couples, families, empty nesters, and youth gathering to share experiences, prayer, meals, and service alongside one another. Believing that we all bear the image of God, community is taking the time for find what's common among us.

It’s been said that the Church doesn’t have a mission from God. Rather, the Mission has a Church. The name "Mission" speaks of the City. It also speaks Texas. The earliest definition of Christian mission is rooted in The Great Commission. From the sanctuary to the living room and everything in between, it's about welcoming and co-mission-ing.

We currently host two kinds of gatherings on alternating weeks.

The first is a worship gathering on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th Sunday evenings. These gatherings are intimate in feel, interactive in approach, and look inter-generational in appeal. We believe children are shaped by hearing the stories of Christian faith and seeing how others live it out. Our kids are with us for part of our liturgy because we see them as a valuable part of the church community. Children 10 and under are also given a chance to have their own time in a nearby setting for them to cultivate an awareness of the presence of God. Learn more about our Family Ministry in the Involvement page

The second gathering is to host several medium-sized groups (15-30 people) meeting in & around Austin on the 1st & 3rd weekends. "Tribes" share and express faith. And rather than being limited to a demographic of people, our hope is to allow for multiple life stages, like an extended family. If the worship service is the “lecture”, then these gatherings are the laboratory for us to experiment with what we believe is true about God.

Kids at Tribes? Absolutely, bring them! Tribes are another, smaller expression of church. We imagine these groups as we learn to share and practice our faith together.
